Which way will you be facing at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 21? An hour earlier the answer is southwest, toward the Chicago River at Michigan Avenue, where the Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular closes the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. At 8:30 the answer is east, toward Navy Pier, where the first free Winter Fireworks of the season go up over the lake.
Both shows fall on the same night, about an hour apart, and both carry the same sponsor's name. Streeterville sits between the two launch points. For most of the afternoon, its western edge is closed to traffic. Read in order, that Saturday is one evening that starts at the river and ends at the pier, and then repeats at the pier every Saturday until the day after Christmas.
Michigan Avenue closes at 3 p.m.
The Lights Festival is a parade on paper. For anyone who lives east of Michigan Avenue, it is mostly a schedule of closures. The Magnificent Mile Association's Lights Festival guide lists these closures for Saturday, November 21:
- 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.: North Michigan Avenue from Oak Street to Wacker Drive, Oak Street from State Street to Michigan Avenue, and Upper Wacker Drive from Michigan Avenue to the east turnaround
- 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.: curb lanes on Upper Columbus from Wacker Drive to Randolph Street, and on Randolph Street from Michigan to Columbus
- 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.: Upper Columbus from Wacker Drive to Randolph
The Association calls these anticipated closures, so the times could still shift before the day. The one that matters most for a Streeterville afternoon is pedestrian, not traffic. The guide says the DuSable Bridge, formerly the Michigan Avenue Bridge, closes to people on foot as early as 3 p.m. It suggests crossing before then or using the Columbus Drive bridge. If you have dinner plans in the Loop, River North or the Gold Coast that Saturday, that 3 p.m. cutoff decides how you get there. Upper Columbus loses its curb lanes at 3:30 and closes fully from 5 to 7:30, so the eastern bridge gets busier as the evening goes on. Our guide to CTA buses and nearby L stops covers the transit side if you would rather not drive.
The afternoon has a quieter option too. Lights Festival Lane runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pioneer Court, 401 N. Michigan Ave., with complimentary Wintrust Photos with Santa and cheesecake decorating with Eli's Cheesecake. For the parade itself, the Association says the east side of Michigan Avenue is less crowded, especially at the north end of the route.
A few blocks east, Block Club Chicago reported that Local Eclectic, the Chicago jewelry brand that started online, opened its first physical store in early September. It is in a restored historic mansion at 212 E. Ontario St., with three first-floor shopping rooms of the brand's own jewelry and pieces from independent labels. The same report said the planned LE Café would serve a custom Metric coffee blend, wine, pastries, small plates and cocktails, and that the owner meant it to be laptop-free. Holiday gift shopping a block off the parade route, without crossing the avenue, is a new option this year.
One sponsor, two launch points
The 35th annual parade is billed as the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, presented by Enjoy Illinois with support from Chicagoland Kia Dealers. The fireworks that end it are the Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular. At Navy Pier, the Winter Fireworks listing names Wintrust as presenting partner for the November 21 show specifically. Six days later, Wintrust becomes the new presenting sponsor of the pier's indoor holiday festival.
One bank's name on the parade, the river show, the first pier show and Winter WonderFest makes the opening of the season read as a single program. The geography lines up the same way. The river show goes up over the Chicago River at Michigan Avenue, with crowds lining Wacker Drive. The pier show goes up from Navy Pier at 600 E. Grand Ave. Streeterville covers the ground between those two points.
The river show's start time needs one caveat. The Association's main festival page lists it at 7:30 p.m., and its detailed guide says approximately 7:15 p.m. Plan for the earlier time. Either way, the river finale ends an hour or more before the pier show starts at 8:30. That leaves enough time to walk east along the river or up through the neighborhood, stop for something warm, and still reach the lakefront before the second show.
November 21, hour by hour
- 11 a.m. Lights Festival Lane opens at Pioneer Court, 401 N. Michigan Ave.
- 3 p.m. Michigan Avenue from Oak to Wacker closes to vehicles, and the DuSable Bridge may close to pedestrians.
- 4 p.m. Lights Festival Lane wraps up.
- 5:30 p.m. Grand Marshals Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse step off at Oak Street and Michigan Avenue and lead the parade south, lighting more than one million lights on 200 trees block by block. Santa arrives on the Wintrust Grand Finale float.
- About 7:15 to 7:30 p.m. The Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular goes up over the river at Michigan Avenue. The parade ends at Wacker Drive, just past the DuSable Bridge.
- 7:30 p.m. The main Michigan Avenue, Oak Street and Upper Wacker closures are scheduled to lift.
- 8:30 p.m. Navy Pier's first free Winter Fireworks of the season.
The Association offers wheelchair-accessible viewing for the parade and fireworks, with a car drop-off in the northbound curb lane of Wabash Avenue just north of Trump International Hotel. It allows one guest per person using a wheelchair. If you'd rather watch from the sofa, ABC7 Chicago airs the parade on Sunday, November 22, from 6 to 7 p.m.
After the 21st, the pier keeps the schedule
Navy Pier's free Winter Fireworks run every Saturday from November 21 through December 26. That puts six fixed Saturday-night shows on the neighborhood's calendar, alongside a few dated runs nearby.
| Saturday | 8:30 p.m. at Navy Pier | Also that week |
|---|---|---|
| November 21 | Winter Fireworks, Wintrust presenting | Lights Festival parade and river fireworks |
| November 28 | Winter Fireworks | Winter WonderFest's first weekend, after it opens Friday, November 27 |
| December 5 | Winter Fireworks | Winter WonderFest open daily |
| December 12 | Winter Fireworks | Last day of The Winter's Tale run at Chicago Shakespeare Theater |
| December 19 | Winter Fireworks | Winter WonderFest open daily |
| December 26 | Final Winter Fireworks of the season | Winter WonderFest continues through January 3 |
If you know the August pier schedule from our late-summer Streeterville post, the winter version is simpler. There is one fixed night a week, and it is on the calendar through December 26.
Indoors, through the same weeks
Winter WonderFest moves the pier's holiday season inside Navy Pier's Festival Hall. Navy Pier's announcement describes a 170,000-square-foot space with an ornament-filled forest, an ice-skating rink, the Cliffhanger and the Arctic Express Train. It runs from Friday, November 27, 2026, through Sunday, January 3, 2027. General admission is $27 if you buy at least 24 hours ahead and $32 within 24 hours or at the door. Children two and under get in free. With a $5 difference for buying the day before, a Saturday that starts at the rink and ends with the 8:30 show is worth booking ahead. The event opens daily at 10 a.m., and closing times vary by day.
Chicago Shakespeare Theater's The Winter's Tale plays at the Jentes Family Courtyard Theater through December 12. The Saturday performances on December 5 and December 12 are listed at 1 p.m., and the run time is 2 hours 35 minutes plus an intermission, so a matinee still leaves the evening open for the 8:30 show.
On the western side of the neighborhood, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago opens Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers on Saturday, November 7. It runs through April 25, 2027. That makes it the one exhibition in the neighborhood that covers the whole fireworks season and the months after it. Outside, the plaza is already in its winter season. SOAR's farmers market on the MCA Plaza listed Tuesday, November 3, as its final date of the year.
